The Principle Behind the System
Replacing windows is expensive, disruptive and sometimes prohibited in period or listed properties. Flutter Shutter takes a different approach.
The transparent roller blind combined with the plantation shutter form an integrated system that reduces heat loss, manages solar gain and improves the everyday comfort of any room, without altering the windows themselves.
Below we explain exactly how each function works.
Heat Retention
In colder months, single-glazed and older windows allow warmth to escape quickly. This drives up heating costs and leaves rooms feeling draughty.
The transparent thermal roller blind combined with the layer of insulating air between the glass and the blind slows the transfer of heat from inside to outside, helping your home retain warmth for longer.
The result is steadier indoor temperatures and reduced demand on your heating system.
By cutting heat loss through windows, Flutter Shutter™ can help you save up to £200 per year on energy bills* and supports a stronger EPC rating, all while keeping your existing windows in place.

Solar Shading
Large or south-facing windows can cause rooms to overheat in summer. Direct sunlight raises internal temperatures and can fade furnishings over time.
The plantation shutter gives you precise control over incoming light. Adjustable louvres let you filter, redirect, or block sunlight to suit the time of day. This reduces solar gain when you need to keep a room cool, while allowing light in when you want it.
This balance of shading and daylight control helps maintain a comfortable environment year-round, without relying on energy-hungry cooling.
*Flutter Shutter is a multifaceted product. The transparent thermal roller blind is to be fully retracted during the warmer months for optimal solar shading performance.
Ventilation
Flutter Shutter™ is an internally installed thermal secondary glazing shutter system designed to improve window thermal performance while maintaining the dwelling’s existing ventilation strategy.
The system is mounted within the internal window reveal and does not modify or obstruct the window frame, external façade, or any existing background ventilators such as trickle vents or air bricks. As a result, the installation does not reduce or compromise the equivalent area of ventilation required under Approved Document F.
To ensure continued airflow into the occupied space, Flutter Shutter™ incorporates integrated stoppers within the side guide system. These prevent the roller blind from descending fully flush with the windowsill and intentionally maintain a continuous ventilation gap at the base of the window opening. This design allows air entering through background ventilators to circulate freely into the room.

Comfort Improvement
Comfort is about more than temperature alone. Cold glass, draughts, glare, and noise all affect how a room feels.
By forming a barrier between the living space and the window, Flutter Shutter™ reduces cold spots near the glass and minimises draughts.
Rooms feel warmer in winter and cooler in summer, with fewer fluctuations throughout the day.
The plantation shutter also helps soften light and improve privacy, adding to the sense of a calm, well-managed living space.
For homeowners, this means premium comfort. For housing providers, it means improved living conditions for residents without major building works.
